As schools gear up for National School Meals Week 2025, the National School Pantry Network is proud to reaffirm our commitment to supporting schools and families so that healthy meals are not just a dream, but a reality.
In too many places, children arrive in school and leave without the security of knowing if they’ll get that nourishing lunch. When access to wholesome food is inconsistent, we undermine children’s potential, their wellbeing and their right to thrive. At the Pantry Network we believe schools should be hubs of nutritional support, where food security, education and community come together.
“Our role is to partner with schools to ensure they are equipped, enabled and empowered so that every child, every family, has the support they need, at lunch time and beyond.” – Kevin Mackay, Co-Founder, Rethink Food
Why school pantries matter
- They complement the traditional hot school-meal provision by providing additional food resources for families and communities.
- They build resilience and continuity, so that when pressures rise (cost-of-living, food insecurity, family stress) schools are supported to respond.
- They enable a culture of dignity and partnership, schools working with students, families and local business/charity supporters to make healthy food choices realistic and sustainable.
- They reinforce the message that food education and nutrition aren’t optional, they are part of the infrastructure of a healthy school environment.
What we’re encouraging schools to do this week
- Use National School Meals Week to showcase your pantry, or if you’re not yet part of the network, talk to us about joining.
- Pair your hot meal service with pantry support: share how families can engage, collect, contribute or learn.
- Embed discussion of food security, healthy eating and community support into assemblies, classroom sessions and parent communications.
- Invite local business, community partners and parents into the conversation, help make the pantry a shared asset.
- Use this week as a springboard for long-term thinking: how will your school ensure that healthy food access, education and family support remain integrated into your strategy?
We’re asking schools, local businesses, community organisations and families to step up. Let’s not just settle for what is already happening: let’s imagine what should be happening for every child in every school. That means consistent access to healthy food, meaningful support at home, and learning environments where no child is left behind because of what they eat (or don’t eat).
Together, through the National School Pantry Network, we can build a future where healthy eating, food security and sustainability are woven into the fabric of school life.
Let’s make this National School Meals Week count, not just for one week, but for the years ahead.
