It’s hard to concentrate when you’re hungry. For too many children, food insecurity is an invisible barrier that affects attendance, behaviour, and academic achievement. Across the UK, families are struggling to put food on the table, and schools are seeing the consequences firsthand.

Teachers report children arriving at school without breakfast, lacking the energy to focus on lessons. Some students become withdrawn, while others act out – both reactions to the stress of hunger. The simple truth is: when children don’t have access to nutritious food, their ability to learn, grow, and thrive is severely impacted.

The National School Pantry Network is designed to remove food insecurity from the equation, giving children the nourishment they need to succeed. School pantries aren’t just about meals – they’re about creating healthier, happier futures by ensuring that every child has the foundation they need to thrive.

Here’s how it works:

Schools receive direct funding to purchase high-quality food.
Rather than relying on emergency food aid, schools are given financial support to buy nutritious food that meets the needs of their students and local communities. This flexibility ensures that schools can make the best choices for their pupils.

Families are supported with practical food education.
Providing food is just one piece of the puzzle. We also equip families with the knowledge and skills to make the most of their food resources, through meal planning support, easy-to-follow recipes, and workshops. This helps to foster long-term food security and well-being at home.

Dedicated account management and financial support for schools.
Schools in the network receive hands-on support from a dedicated account manager, helping them navigate funding, track spending, and maximize their impact. This means schools can focus on what matters most—supporting their students.

A child who isn’t worried about their next meal can focus on learning, participate more fully in class, and develop the confidence to succeed. When we invest in school pantries, we’re not just providing food – we’re giving children the opportunity to reach their full potential.

“We know that hungry children can’t learn. A school pantry is more than a food offer—it’s an investment in a child’s ability to succeed today and tomorrow.”
