This week is Food Waste Action Week, the UK’s biggest campaign helping households waste less food and make their food go further. Led by Love Food Hate Waste, the campaign encourages simple actions like using leftovers, planning meals and making the most of what’s already in the fridge or cupboard.
The message couldn’t be more important. Every year, UK households throw away 4.4 million tonnes of edible food, costing families around £1,000 per year on average.
At the National School Pantry Network, we see every day how valuable food is to families and communities. Reducing food waste isn’t just good for the planet, it also helps household budgets stretch further and ensures good food is used where it’s needed most.
Sometimes the best meals come from what you already have at home. Leftover vegetables, slightly stale bread or cooked rice can easily become a delicious new meal with a little creativity.
To celebrate Food Waste Action Week we have pulled together three simple, family-friendly recipes designed to help you use up everyday ingredients and turn leftovers into tasty meals including Leftover Veg & Rice Fritters, “Use-It-Up” Vegetable Soup and Crispy Bread Crumb Pasta…check them out here and get cooking!
